Naoshima in August
Not the best time
August is Naoshima's worst month. Brutal heat meets summer crowds in a perfect storm of misery.
Weather
August peaks as the year's most uncomfortable month with scorching temperatures around 33°C and crushing humidity. Rain becomes less frequent (8 days) but when it comes, it's often violent thunderstorms. Absolutely sweltering.

August Tips
- •Obon week in mid-August brings domestic tourist crowds despite the heat
- •Morning ferry rides (before 8am) are your friend - everything else is torture
- •Consider skipping outdoor installations entirely - stick to air-conditioned museums
All Months
Spring and fall offer Naoshima at its finest. April brings cherry blossoms that frame Kusama's pumpkin sculptures beautifully, while November delivers crisp air and golden light that makes Ando's concrete architecture glow. Avoid July and August – the humidity is brutal, and the museums get uncomfortably crowded with tour groups. Winter brings a different kind of beauty, with fewer tourists and dramatic skies over the Seto Sea, but some outdoor installations close for maintenance. The Setouchi Triennale art festival runs every three years (next in 2025), bringing special exhibitions but also massive crowds. If you visit during the festival, book accommodation six months ahead and arrive early at popular museums. Tuesday closures affect most museums, so plan accordingly.
