Sintra in March

Good time to visit

March sits in that awkward shoulder season - not quite winter, not quite spring. The weather's unpredictable but the crowds are still minimal if you don't mind rolling the dice.

Weather

March marks the slow transition toward spring, with temperatures creeping up and rain becoming less constant. You'll get more sunny days mixed in with the showers, though mornings can still be surprisingly cold. The gardens at Monserrate start showing signs of life again.

March Tips

  • Layer up - it can be 10°C at sunrise and 20°C by afternoon
  • March is when some seasonal restaurants and shops start reopening
  • The hiking trails around the Sintra hills are muddy but less crowded

All Months

April through June brings mild weather and blooming gardens without summer crowds. Rhododendrons and camellias flower in Monserrate's gardens, and you can actually enjoy Pena Palace's terraces in peace. September and October offer the best compromise — warm days, fewer tourists, and autumn colors in the parks. Hotel prices drop 30% compared to summer peak. July and August? Prepare for chaos. Temperatures hit 35°C, palaces overflow with tour groups, and restaurant waits stretch to an hour. If you must visit in summer, arrive at palace opening times (9:30 AM) or after 4 PM. Winter (November-March) sees rain and shorter days, but you'll have places mostly to yourself. Some palace gardens look bare, but interiors stay impressive. Pack layers — hilltop temperatures drop 5-10 degrees below Lisbon.
