Sintra in May

Great time to visit

May is prime time Sintra with near-perfect weather and everything in full swing. Just be prepared for crowds and higher prices - this is when the secret gets out.

Weather

May brings consistently beautiful weather with warm, sunny days and minimal rainfall. The morning fog that often shrouds the palaces usually burns off by 10am, revealing crystal clear views. Evenings are mild enough for outdoor dining at quinta restaurants.

Events & Festivals

  • Various music festivals in nearby Cascais

May Tips

  • Book palace tickets online in advance - Pena Palace sells out by noon on weekends
  • Start early (8am) to beat tour groups from Lisbon that arrive around 10am
  • May is ideal for the coastal walk from Azenhas do Mar to Praia das Maçãs

All Months

April through June brings mild weather and blooming gardens without summer crowds. Rhododendrons and camellias flower in Monserrate's gardens, and you can actually enjoy Pena Palace's terraces in peace. September and October offer the best compromise — warm days, fewer tourists, and autumn colors in the parks. Hotel prices drop 30% compared to summer peak. July and August? Prepare for chaos. Temperatures hit 35°C, palaces overflow with tour groups, and restaurant waits stretch to an hour. If you must visit in summer, arrive at palace opening times (9:30 AM) or after 4 PM. Winter (November-March) sees rain and shorter days, but you'll have places mostly to yourself. Some palace gardens look bare, but interiors stay impressive. Pack layers — hilltop temperatures drop 5-10 degrees below Lisbon.
