Versailles in August

Great time to visit

Still peak season with hot weather and maximum crowds. The gardens start looking a bit worn from summer heat, but the long evening hours make sunset visits magical.

Weather

August continues July's heat with many days hitting the high 20s. Afternoon thunderstorms become more frequent, providing dramatic skies over the palace. The gardens look a bit tired by month's end, with some brown patches appearing on lawns.

August Tips

  • Many Parisians are on vacation so some nearby restaurants close
  • Carry umbrella for sudden thunderstorms
  • Palace fountains provide cooling spots during garden walks

All Months

April through October offers the best weather and full garden access. May brings perfect temperatures and blooming flowers, but also the biggest crowds. September strikes the ideal balance – warm days, fewer tourists, and the gardens still look spectacular. Winter visits work if you focus on the palace interiors. The Hall of Mirrors looks just as impressive in January, and you'll actually get photos without strangers in them. But Marie Antoinette's estate closes sections in winter, and the gardens lose their magic. Arrive by 9 AM any season to beat the tour buses. Tuesday through Thursday see smaller crowds than weekends. The palace stays open until 6:30 PM in summer, giving you time to explore after the day-trippers leave.
