Versailles in November

Good time to visit

November's when Versailles enters its dreary phase with gray skies and bare gardens. Only worth visiting if you're primarily interested in the palace interiors and don't mind the gloom.

Weather

November turns gray and damp with frequent drizzle and overcast skies. Temperatures drop noticeably, and the short daylight hours make afternoon visits feel rushed. Most garden flowers are gone, leaving bare branches and muddy pathways.

November Tips

  • Focus on interior palace tours since gardens look bleak
  • Waterproof shoes essential for muddy garden paths
  • Hotel rates drop significantly this month

All Months

April through October offers the best weather and full garden access. May brings perfect temperatures and blooming flowers, but also the biggest crowds. September strikes the ideal balance – warm days, fewer tourists, and the gardens still look spectacular. Winter visits work if you focus on the palace interiors. The Hall of Mirrors looks just as impressive in January, and you'll actually get photos without strangers in them. But Marie Antoinette's estate closes sections in winter, and the gardens lose their magic. Arrive by 9 AM any season to beat the tour buses. Tuesday through Thursday see smaller crowds than weekends. The palace stays open until 6:30 PM in summer, giving you time to explore after the day-trippers leave.
