Versailles in January
Not the best time
January means you'll practically have the palace to yourself, but the weather's brutal and half the gardens are closed. Only worth it if you're already in Paris and don't mind the cold.
Weather
January brings the coldest temperatures of the year, with frequent frost and occasional snow. Gray skies dominate most days, and humidity stays high around 85%. The gardens look stark and bare, but the château's ornate interiors feel extra cozy.

January Tips
- •Pack waterproof boots for muddy garden paths
- •Visit weekdays when tourist groups are minimal
- •Check château opening hours as they're reduced in winter
All Months
April through October offers the best weather and full garden access. May brings perfect temperatures and blooming flowers, but also the biggest crowds. September strikes the ideal balance – warm days, fewer tourists, and the gardens still look spectacular.
Winter visits work if you focus on the palace interiors. The Hall of Mirrors looks just as impressive in January, and you'll actually get photos without strangers in them. But Marie Antoinette's estate closes sections in winter, and the gardens lose their magic.
Arrive by 9 AM any season to beat the tour buses. Tuesday through Thursday see smaller crowds than weekends. The palace stays open until 6:30 PM in summer, giving you time to explore after the day-trippers leave.
