Vientiane in January

Great time to visit

Peak season for a reason. The weather is absolutely perfect for temple hopping and riverside walks. Just expect to pay top dollar and share the sights with plenty of other visitors.

Weather

January brings cool, dry air that makes walking around the city actually pleasant. Mornings can feel almost chilly by Lao standards, while afternoons warm up nicely. You'll barely see a cloud, let alone rain.

January Tips

  • Pack layers for the surprisingly cool mornings
  • Book accommodations early as this is peak season
  • Morning visits to Wat Sisaket are perfect in the cooler weather

All Months

November through March gives you the best weather. Days hit 25-30°C, nights cool down to 15-20°C, and rain stays away. December and January are perfect — clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and the Mekong runs low enough to reveal sandy beaches. April and May bring serious heat. Temperatures push past 35°C, and the air gets heavy before the rains start. But crowds disappear and prices drop. If you can handle the heat, you'll have temples mostly to yourself. Rainy season runs June through October. It doesn't rain all day, but when it does, streets flood quickly. The upside? Everything turns green, the air clears, and accommodation costs hit rock bottom. Just pack good rain gear and flexible plans.
