Houston in September

Good time to visit

The light at the end of summer's tunnel starts to flicker. Still hot and humid, but you can sense autumn's eventual arrival.

Weather

September offers false hope with temperatures still hitting 34°C, though nights finally drop to a more reasonable 23°C. Humidity remains high but becomes slightly more tolerable. About 7 rainy days, with hurricane season still a concern.

September Tips

  • Early mornings become pleasant for outdoor activities again
  • Hurricane season continues through November - travel insurance becomes worth considering

All Months

October through April gives you Houston's sweet spot — warm days, cool evenings, and manageable humidity. December and January can surprise you with actual cold fronts, but you'll still see 70-degree days mixed in. March and April bloom with azaleas in River Oaks and perfect weather for outdoor festivals. Summer is brutal. We're talking 95+ degrees with humidity that makes the air feel thick as soup from May through September. But hotel rates drop 40% and you'll have pools to yourself. Just plan indoor activities during peak afternoon heat. Avoid late August through October if possible — hurricane season brings flooding risks and general weather chaos. Harvey in 2017 showed how quickly things can go sideways. Spring break (March) and rodeo season (late February/early March) jack up prices and crowds significantly.
