Fraser Island in December
Not the best time
Peak season pricing meets peak discomfort. December brings crowds, heat, and holiday premiums that make Fraser Island feel more like an endurance test than a vacation.
Weather
December delivers full summer heat and humidity with a vengeance. Temperatures soar into the low 30s with humidity that makes simple tasks exhausting. Daily thunderstorms return with intensity, and the air feels thick enough to chew most afternoons.

All Months
April through September offers the sweet spot – warm days, cool nights, and minimal rainfall. Water temperatures hover around 22°C, perfect for lake swimming without the summer crowds. This is peak season, so book accommodation and vehicle permits well ahead.
Winter (June-August) brings the clearest skies and best wildlife viewing. Humpback whales migrate past the eastern beaches, and cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable. Night temperatures can drop to 10°C, so pack warm clothes for camping.
Avoid the wet season (December-March) unless you enjoy mud, mosquitoes, and flooded creek crossings. Stinger season also peaks during summer months, making ocean swimming risky even in the safer areas. But if you do visit, you'll have the island largely to yourself.
