Fraser Island in March

Good time to visit

Summer's grip is loosening but hasn't let go completely. You'll get slightly better weather and lower prices, but it's still not ideal timing.

Weather

March offers the first hints that summer might eventually end. Temperatures start dropping slightly, but humidity remains high and afternoon storms are still regular visitors. The heat is more bearable than peak summer, but you're still looking at sweaty conditions most days.

March Tips

  • Prices start dropping as school holidays end
  • Still pack for wet weather - the storms haven't finished yet
  • Morning tours are your friend before the afternoon heat builds

All Months

April through September offers the sweet spot – warm days, cool nights, and minimal rainfall. Water temperatures hover around 22°C, perfect for lake swimming without the summer crowds. This is peak season, so book accommodation and vehicle permits well ahead. Winter (June-August) brings the clearest skies and best wildlife viewing. Humpback whales migrate past the eastern beaches, and cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable. Night temperatures can drop to 10°C, so pack warm clothes for camping. Avoid the wet season (December-March) unless you enjoy mud, mosquitoes, and flooded creek crossings. Stinger season also peaks during summer months, making ocean swimming risky even in the safer areas. But if you do visit, you'll have the island largely to yourself.
