Fraser Island in October

Good time to visit

The weather window is closing. October is still manageable, but you can feel summer lurking around the corner with increasing heat and humidity.

Weather

October sees temperatures climbing back into the high 20s and humidity starting its unwelcome return. You'll get some beautiful days, but the afternoon heat is becoming noticeable again. Rain starts picking up, though it's still manageable compared to summer levels.

October Tips

  • Start planning activities for earlier in the day as heat builds
  • Still good value before summer peak pricing kicks in
  • Beginning to need serious sun protection again

All Months

April through September offers the sweet spot – warm days, cool nights, and minimal rainfall. Water temperatures hover around 22°C, perfect for lake swimming without the summer crowds. This is peak season, so book accommodation and vehicle permits well ahead. Winter (June-August) brings the clearest skies and best wildlife viewing. Humpback whales migrate past the eastern beaches, and cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable. Night temperatures can drop to 10°C, so pack warm clothes for camping. Avoid the wet season (December-March) unless you enjoy mud, mosquitoes, and flooded creek crossings. Stinger season also peaks during summer months, making ocean swimming risky even in the safer areas. But if you do visit, you'll have the island largely to yourself.
