Fraser Island in February

Not the best time

Still brutally hot and now with added cyclone drama. February tests your tolerance for Queensland's most extreme weather conditions.

Weather

February continues the summer punishment with high temperatures and oppressive humidity. The wet season is in full swing, bringing cyclone risks and daily downpours that can last for hours. Humidity rarely drops below 80%, making even simple walks feel exhausting.

February Tips

  • Monitor weather reports closely - cyclones can shut down ferry services
  • Pack waterproof everything, including backup phone protection
  • Consider postponing if you're not comfortable with extreme weather conditions

All Months

April through September offers the sweet spot – warm days, cool nights, and minimal rainfall. Water temperatures hover around 22°C, perfect for lake swimming without the summer crowds. This is peak season, so book accommodation and vehicle permits well ahead. Winter (June-August) brings the clearest skies and best wildlife viewing. Humpback whales migrate past the eastern beaches, and cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable. Night temperatures can drop to 10°C, so pack warm clothes for camping. Avoid the wet season (December-March) unless you enjoy mud, mosquitoes, and flooded creek crossings. Stinger season also peaks during summer months, making ocean swimming risky even in the safer areas. But if you do visit, you'll have the island largely to yourself.
