Fraser Island in January
Not the best time
Peak summer means peak prices, peak crowds, and peak discomfort. The heat and humidity make exploring genuinely unpleasant, and you'll pay premium rates for the privilege.
Weather
January brings scorching heat and crushing humidity to Fraser Island. Temperatures regularly push into the mid-30s with humidity levels that make you feel like you're breathing through a wet towel. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in most days, dumping heavy rain that turns the sand tracks into muddy quagmires.

January Tips
- •Book accommodation 6 months ahead - this is peak season
- •Bring serious insect repellent - the mosquitoes are relentless in the humidity
- •Start 4WD tours early morning before the heat becomes unbearable
All Months
April through September offers the sweet spot – warm days, cool nights, and minimal rainfall. Water temperatures hover around 22°C, perfect for lake swimming without the summer crowds. This is peak season, so book accommodation and vehicle permits well ahead.
Winter (June-August) brings the clearest skies and best wildlife viewing. Humpback whales migrate past the eastern beaches, and cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable. Night temperatures can drop to 10°C, so pack warm clothes for camping.
Avoid the wet season (December-March) unless you enjoy mud, mosquitoes, and flooded creek crossings. Stinger season also peaks during summer months, making ocean swimming risky even in the safer areas. But if you do visit, you'll have the island largely to yourself.
