Juneau in July

Great time to visit

July brings peak season chaos but also peak conditions. You'll fight crowds at every turn, but the weather and wildlife viewing opportunities are as good as they get in Southeast Alaska.

Weather

July serves up Juneau's warmest and driest weather, though 'dry' is relative - you'll still see rain most weeks. Temperatures stay comfortable with nearly 18 hours of daylight. This is as close to perfect as Juneau weather gets, with mild days ideal for hiking and whale watching.

July Tips

  • Make dinner reservations days ahead - restaurants fill up fast
  • The downtown area gets packed when multiple cruise ships dock
  • Book helicopter tours early morning to avoid afternoon crowds and clouds

All Months

May through September offers the warmest weather and longest daylight hours. July brings peak tourist season — expect crowds at major attractions and higher hotel prices. But you'll also get 18+ hours of daylight and the best chance of clear glacier views. September is the sweet spot. Cruise ship crowds thin out after Labor Day, hotel rates drop, and you still get decent weather with stunning fall colors. Northern lights start appearing on clear nights. Winter visits require serious planning. Many tour operators shut down, and daylight lasts only 6-7 hours. But if you can handle the cold and darkness, you'll have the place mostly to yourself. The aurora displays can be incredible on clear nights.
