Great time to visit
September offers a nice compromise - fewer crowds than summer but still decent weather for most activities. The shoulder season pricing kicks in, and locals reclaim their city from the summer tourist invasion.
Weather
September brings the start of fall with cooling temperatures and increasing rainfall. Daylight drops noticeably to around 13 hours by month's end. Early September can still feel summery, but late September definitely shifts toward autumn with more persistent rain systems.

All Months
May through September offers the warmest weather and longest daylight hours. July brings peak tourist season — expect crowds at major attractions and higher hotel prices. But you'll also get 18+ hours of daylight and the best chance of clear glacier views.
September is the sweet spot. Cruise ship crowds thin out after Labor Day, hotel rates drop, and you still get decent weather with stunning fall colors. Northern lights start appearing on clear nights.
Winter visits require serious planning. Many tour operators shut down, and daylight lasts only 6-7 hours. But if you can handle the cold and darkness, you'll have the place mostly to yourself. The aurora displays can be incredible on clear nights.
